Vacuum cleaning
The first thing you want to do is to vacuum everything from furniture to carpets and even fabric window coverings. Pet fur and dander tend to linger in these areas. Next, sprinkle baking soda over all carpets, rugs, and upholstered surfaces. Allow to sit for several hours, and then vacuum it again. Baking soda helps to neutralize trapped odors.
Sunlight and open air cleaning
For upholstered furniture, rugs, and portable fabric-covered items, expose them to fresh air and sunshine for several hours on a dry, non-humid day. Sunlight and airflow help remove all types of odors stuck within fabric fibers. Meanwhile, open the curtains and windows to air your rental unit out for several hours a day.
Find the source of odor
Using a handheld black light walk through the house with the rest of the room’s lights turned off and search for the source of the stench such as urine spots. Once located, use either a vinegar solution or enzymatic cleaner to remove the odor. With vinegar solution, test it with inconspicuous area first, such as in a closet, to ensure it doesn’t discolor the carpet. Enzymatic cleaner, on the other hand, helps to remove odor, debris, and germs left behind by pet accidents.
Wash floors and walls
Vinegar can also be used to deodorize and disinfect floors and interior walls. First, spray a light mist of three parts vinegar, one part water over the affected area. Wet a sponge with the same solution then wring out most of the moisture, and wipe the area down again. Sprinkle a little baking soda over the area if you still notice an odor and then brush or vacuum the powder away once it dries.
