Fire safety precautions to take this summer

Summertime is in full swing, which means your probably lighting campfires, bonfires and kick-starting other exiting fun activities. But before you take the plunge, take time to protect yourself and your loved ones make with these Summer Fire Safety Precautions.

Outdoor space safety

To ensure you have peace of mind while you party and have fun with your family, be sure to learn outdoor cooking safety before you get grilling outside. Make sure you’ve set your grill a few feet away from the house and high traffic areas. Also, keep the deck surface cleans from anything that can burn, such as leaves and papers.

Do not leave your barbecue unattended. Even if you have to leave for a short time, make sure your remove the BBQ from the grill. In addition, have your fire extinguisher close by, just in case the flames get out of control. Never use water because that can actually spread the flames.

Outdoor lighting safety

Summer is also a season of late night entertainment so you may want to extend your lighting network outdoors. Ensure the outdoor space is properly lit- always hire a licensed electrician to install electrical appliances on your space. When it comes to outdoor lighting, choose safety over aesthetics.

Campfire safety

If you’ll be spending the summer camping or just toasting marshmallows in the backyard, make sure you educate yourself about campfire safety. Set up the campfire in a place where it will not spread, away from leaves, grass or overhanging tree branches. Dig a pit for the fire, and surround it with rocks.

Do not place your campfire near the tent. Also, do not store gasoline, liquid fire starter or other flammable materials near the campfire.  A stray fire can easily ignite these materials. Before lighting a campfire, make sure you have the means of extinguishing it.  To extinguish a campfire douse it with water, use a shovel to bury the fire with ash and dirt. Then douse the area with water.
